Sample answer to describe a place where you thought things were too expensive.

The place I’d like to talk about is Ben Thanh Market, which is located in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City. This market is one of the oldest and most iconic landmarks in the city, attracting both locals and tourists alike.

Two years ago, when my Japanese friend visited Ho Chi Minh City, I had the opportunity to accompany him and introduce him to the city. He wanted to buy some souvenirs, so I took him to Ben Thanh Market. While we were walking around, my first impression was that the sellers could speak foreign languages very well, but I also noticed that the prices were significantly higher than I had expected.

Everything from clothing items such as traditional Vietnamese Ao Dai and silk scarves to handicrafts like bamboo products was priced two or three times higher than in other markets. Even the food items, like the famous Vietnamese Pho and spring rolls, were more expensive compared to other local eateries.

I thought the goods were expensive probably due to the market’s popularity among tourists. It’s a common trend in many tourist hotspots around the world where prices are inflated due to high demand. Additionally, the market is located in the city center, where the cost of living and doing business is generally higher.

Despite understanding the reasons, I couldn’t help but feel a bit overwhelmed by the high prices. While I appreciated the quality and uniqueness of the items, I felt that the prices were not completely justified. It made me more cautious about my spending and I found myself bargaining more than I usually would.
